The Benefits Of Music Lessons

Based on our teaching experience, we have observed the benefits that learning music can bring, such as improved memory and cognition skills, better grades at school, reduced stress and anxiety, and increased confidence. Music can also be extremely beneficial to seniors as well as children with autism spectrum disorder.

Our lessons are designed to be fun and engaging for the students. We like to provide an easier, less stressful environment for our students, but we can also push our students harder if they want or if they are preparing for auditions.

Yumi Kitchell, Piano Instructor

Co-founder of Carmel Valley Music Lessons

JD with Cum Laude from TJSL, BM in Music Education with Magna Cum Laude from SDSU. Fluent in both Japanese and English.

Yumi is a specialist in piano technique; she likes to help her students get the best possible sound out of any piano. She believes that you don’t need the highest quality piano/instrument to develop good technique; in fact, learning on a high grade piano can  actually hinder your development, as the beautiful sound of the instrument can mask deficiencies in your technique.

“I have observed a strong connection between music education and academic success. I started playing piano when I was 8 years old. I sincerely believe that piano practice helped me graduate with honors from SDSU and Thomas Jefferson School of Law despite English being my second language.”

Cris Eaves, Guitar Instructor

Co-founder of Carmel Valley Music Lessons

BA in Music, specialized in Music Composition with honors from UCSD.

Cris enjoys playing all styles of music, and has performed live with orchestras, jazz bands, rock bands, country bands, and everything in between. On top of writing and producing his own original music, Cris also performs solo classical/flamenco guitar for weddings and events. Cris teaches all styles of guitar, including but not limited to: Rock, Jazz, Pop, Classical/Flamenco, Country, Metal, Blues, and R&B. He also produces video and audio for several projects, such as music videos and various YouTube channels.

“I love sharing my passion for music with students and seeing the joy they get from learning and performing; the only thing more rewarding to me than performing myself is when a student gains that same love of music.”

About Lessons:

  • Warm Up

Lessons usually begin by warming up with scales and exercises. Playing scales not only helps build the student’s technique, but also trains their ears and prepares them for band auditions in high school and college.

  • Learn Songs

Most of the lesson will focus on learning and practicing songs. Students can focus on any style, and they are welcome to request the songs they want to learn.

  • Music Theory

Students will also learn music theory along with technique and repertoire. Music theory helps give students the skills to improvise, arrange a new way to play a song, or compose their own songs.

“I am very impressed with the way my son picked up the way to read notes and play a song minutes after his first lesson with Cristopher!!! That speaks volumes about how good of an instructor he is. I'm glad he's my son's instructor and look forward to watching my son's guitar skills grow under his wing.”

— Brian M.

“I have been a senior of Yumi’s for many years. Her lessons are always enjoyable and help you move forward from where you are, beginner or with some history of playing, perhaps from a long time ago. She has a great love of the piano and loves sharing this with others. Her sense of the best approach for each student is amazing!”
